To produce a novel catalyst capable of producing methacrolein and methacrylic acid in high yield by subjecting isobutylene and tertiary butanol to gaseous phase catalytic oxidation using molecular oxygen.
In the production of a catalyst containing composite oxide containing at least molybdenum and bismuth as essential components as a catalytically active substance, a mixed soln. or aq. slurry containing compds. of elements constituting the catalytically active substance is dried and the obtained dried matter is primarily baked at 200-400°C to obtain a catalytical active substance precursor with bulk specific density of 0.7-1.2 and this precursor is molded or supported on an inert carrier and the molded object or supported object is secondarily baked at 450-600°C.
