Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a cellulose ether low in degree of polymn. with a good accuracy of desired viscosity and degree of polymn.
CONSTITUTION: The degree of polymn. after treatment of a cellulose ether as the starting material is calculated according to the following formula: degree of polymn. after treatment = degree of polymn. before treatment/(S+1) wherein S=(-0.000775α+1.07044).β.(0.3179+8.611023H)×1013.(-0.10714W+1.1624).exp(-E/RT).θ [wherein α is the average particle size (μm) of the starting material; βis a constant of 0.7 to 1.0 (μm-1.hr-1) inherent in the kind of starting material; H is the proportion (wt.%) of hydrogen chloride to the starting material in a reactor; W is the proportion (wt.%) of water to the total of the starting material and water in the reactor; E is an activation energy of 20,370cal/mol; R is a gas constant of 1.986cal/(mol.K); T is the temp. (K) in the reactor; and θis the treatment time (hr)]. A reaction is terminated at a predetermined degree of polymn. after treatment.
