PURPOSE: To efficiently and economically obtain high-quality chloranil while improving solubility of product in reacting hydroquinone with a chlorine gas in a reaction solvent, by using an acetic acid-water mixed solvent or an acetic acid-hydrochloric acid-water mixed solvent as a reaction solvent.
CONSTITUTION: In producing chloranil (tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone) useful as an intermediate for pigment and fungicide, chloranil electrode or additive of lubricating oil by reacting hydroquinone with a chlorine gas in a reaction solvent, by using an acetic acid-water mixed solvent or an acetic acid- hydrochloric acid-water mixed solvent having usually 30-95wt.%, preferably 40-90wt.% acetic acid concentration is used as a reaction solvent so that solubility of product is improved, purity is increased, shape of particles is enlarged, reaction filtrate is repeatedly used while maintaining the product in high qualities, labor of treating waste water is omitted and not only production efficiency but handling operation of product can be extremely improved.
