Abstract:

PURPOSE: To easily obtain the title compound in high yield by reaction between a vinyl compound such as styrene, formaldehyde and a hydrogen halide in the presence of an organic polymerization inhibitor such as dihydroxybenzene.

CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II (X is halogen) can be obtained by reaction among (A) a compound of formula I (R1-R3 are each H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkyl, aralkyloxy, carboxyl, OH, SH, NO2 or halogen; R4 and R5 are each H or alkyl), (B) formaldehyde and (C) a hydrogen halide, in the presence of 0.01-10mmol per mol of the compound A of a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. methylhydroquinone, p-t-butylcatechol). As the solvent for the reaction, water can be used most easily, but an organic solvent may also be used.
