To simply produce a compound, usable as a disinfectant for water in pools or cooling towers and useful as a photographic organic material by using a specific amount of a readily available dihalo-dimethylhydantoin at a low cost.
(A) A 1,3-dihalo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin of formula I (X1 and X2 are each Cl or Br) is used to halogenate (B) a compound having an aromatic 5-membered ring structure containing nitrogen (e.g. an aromatic 5-5 condensed ring compound such as a pyrazoloazole or a pyrroloazole, pyrrole, pyrazole or imidazole) is halogenated with X1 or X2 which is the halogen in the compound of formula I to afford (C) a compound of the formula A(X)n [A is the compound of the component (B)]; X is X1 or X2; (n) is an integer of 0-4]. A reactional solvent other than a halogen-based one is preferably used. A pyrazolon-5-one-based coupler, etc., are preferred as the compound of the formula which is the component (C).
