Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the long continuous object for an optical fiber, etc., at economical production rate by injecting and polymerizing a liquid monomer in a sheath at or immediately after the die opening while continuously extruding the sheath material.
CONSTITUTION: This sheath material is supplied as a first component to an extruder provided with a circle extrusion die using the standard extrusion head for producing bi-component fibers of the center coating core(C/C) type and extruded continuously to form hollow fibers. The liquid monomer of an epoxy acrylate resin with an UV initiating agent, etc., contained is injected as a second component at or immediately after the die opening to form cores. The fibers thus obtained are passed through an UV irradiating device to polymerize and cure the liquid monomer in the sheaths, which then are wound at the same speed as the extrusion speed. Accordingly the long, of substantially unlimited length, thermosetting polymer continuous object of the C/C type is obtained at the economically allowable production rate.
