PURPOSE: To produce, in high yield, a copolymer having excellent transparency, heat stability, etc., by permitting a specific dithiocarbamate to be present in the reaction mixture, in polymerizing, in aqueous media, a monomer mixture consisting of an aromatic vinyl compound and acrylonitrile.
CONSTITUTION: About 60W80wt%, based on monomer mixture, of an aromatic vinyl compound such as styrene, vinyltoluene, or dimethylstyrene is mixed with acrylonitrile to obtain a monomer mixture. In polymerizing the monomer mixture, the mixture is charged with about 0.005W0.2wt%, pref. 0.01W0.1wt%, based on monomer mixture, of dithiocarbamate represented by the formula, wherein R1, R2 are 1W6C alkyl or aryl; M is Na, K, Zn, Cu or Fe; and n is 1W3, such as sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, or zinc diethyldithiocarbamate.
