Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide cordierite powder and its ceramic having sufficiently high mechanical strength for a circuit substrate, etc., a thermal expansion coefficient close to that of silicon and low dielectric constant and sinterable at a low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A cordierite composition sol is prepared by mixing alumina sol, silica sol and a water-soluble magnesium salt at ratios to get a composition composed of 25-38wt.% of Al2O3, 45-58wt.% of SiO2 and 12-20wt.% of MgO. The sol prepared by the above process is incorporated with 0.05-10wt.% of boric acid (in terms of B2O3 based on cordierite) and gelatinized. The gel obtained by the gelatinization process is calcined to form cordierite powder.
