Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain crosslinked polymer microparticles useful as a rheology control agent for coating compsns. by polymerizing styrene or an alkyl (meth) acrylate, an alkylene glycol di(meth)acrylate, and an allyl (meth)acrylate in emulsion.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene, an alkyl methacrylate or acrylate having a 1-12C alkyl group or a mixture thereof, 0. 1-5 wt.% crosslinking monomer comprising an alkylene glycol dimethacrylate or diacrylate having a 1-8C alkylene group, and 0.1-5 wt.% allyl methacrylate or acrylate are copolymerized in emulsion to give an emulsion of polymer microparticles having particle sizes of 0.1-5 μm and a wt. average mol.wt. of 500,000-5,000,000. The microparticles are separated to give the objective microparticles.
