To provide a method for producing a cyclic olefinic copolymer, capable of producing the cyclic olefinic copolymer in high productivity by copolymerizing a specific olefin with a cyclic olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specific transition metal imine compound and a specific compound.
This method for producing a cyclic olefinic copolymer comprises copolymerizing (A) a linear or branched olefin with (B) a cyclic olefin in the presence of (C) a catalyst comprising (i) a transition metal imine compound of the formula [M is one of the 8-11 group transition metals in the periodic table; R1-R4 are each H, a halogen, a (halogenated) hydrocarbon, an oxygen- containing group or the like; R5, R6 are each a halogen, a (halogenated) hydrocarbon, an oxygen-containing group or the like; each pair of R1 and R5, R2 and R6, R1 and R3, and R3 and R4 may be bound to each other to form a ring; (n) is the valency of M; X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C (halogenated) hydrocarbon or the like; Y is an atom in the groups 15-16 in the periodic table] and (ii) one or more compounds selected from organic metal compounds, organic aluminumoxy compound and a compound capable of reacting with the component i to form an ion pair.
