To obtain the subject compound useful as a herbicide by reacting a hydroxy-oxabicycloalkane with a benzyl compound.
A 2-hydroxy-oxabicycloalkane of formula I [R3 is a 1-6C alkyl; R4, R6-R9 are each H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like; R5 is a 3-8C halogenocycloalkyl; (p) is 0 or 1] is reacted with a benzyl compound of formula II [R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen or the like; R10 is a halogen, a 1-6C alkyl or the like; Q is a halogen, a 1-2C alkanesulfonyloxy or the like; (q) is 0-3] preferably in an amount of 0.5-5 fold moles in the presence of a base (for example, pyridine) in a solvent (for example, benzene) preferably at 0°C to the refluxing temperature of the reaction solution for 10 min to 48 hr to obtain the objective compound of formula III. The compound of formula I is preferably obtained by reacting an oxabicycloalkan-2-one of formula IV with a reducing agent and subsequently reacting the obtained 2-hydroxy-cycloalkyne of formula V with an oxidizing agent.
