PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain the subject compd. as a biologically active substance-synthesizing intermediate by using cyclopropanecarboxamide being a raw material in an aq. soln. state in place of a suspension state to react the same with an alkali metal hypohalite and treating the reaction product with an alkali hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: Cyclopropanecarboxamide is used in an aq. soln. state as a raw material and alkali metal hypohalite, pref., sodium hypochlorite is added thereto to be reacted therewith at 5-35°C, pref., at 10-25°C. Subsequently, an alkali metal hydroxide is used in a largely excessive amt. (e.g.; 1.1-4 mol, pref., 1.5-3 mol per 1 mol of amide) to treat the reaction mixture to obtain the objective compd. The objective compd. is separated from the obtained reaction mixture by distillation but, in this case, the greater part of the objective compd. can be obtained in an almost anhydrous state (0.1-5 wt.% of water).
