PURPOSE: To obtain the title high-purity compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for spice substance in high yield simply and inexpensively by a specific method using chloro-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: 6-Chloro-1,2:3,5-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose as a raw material shown by formula I is catalytically reduced in the presence of a reduction catalyst (e.g., Raney nickel) to give D-glucofuranose among the aimed compound shown by formula II or the compound shown by formula I is reacted with 1,8-diazabicyclo [5,4,0]-7-undecene and catalytically reduced in the presence of the reduction catalyst to give D-xylofuranose among the aimed compound shown by the formula II. The above-mentioned D-xylofuranose is a novel substance.
