PURPOSE: The liquid-phase chlorination of 1,3-butadiene is effected by introducing 1,3-butadiene and chlorine into a solution containing copper chloride and benzonitrile to produce dichlorobutene without the formation of carbonized solid in spite of the relatively high reaction temperature in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The liquid-phase chlorination of 1,3-butadiene is carried out by introducing 1,3-butadiene and chlorine into a solution containing cuprous or cupric chloride and benzonitrile preferably at 0W150°C under normal, reduced or elevated pressure to produce dichlorobutene. The content of the copper chloride is preferably 0.1W25pts.wt. per 100 parts of benzonitrile. The molar ratio of 1,3-butadiene to chlorine is preferably more than the stoichiometric amount.
