PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound from the bottom of a column, by adding an extracting medium to a reaction product consisting of dichlorotoluene and t-butyltoluene obtained by a reaction between di-t-butyldichlorotoluene and toluene, etc., carrying out distillation to distil t-butyltoluene away.

CONSTITUTION: In producing dichlorotoluene (preferably 2,6-dichlorotoluene) by reacting di-t-tutyldichlorotoluene (preferably 3,5-di-t-butyl-2,6-dichlorotoluene) and/or t-butyldichlorotoluene with toluene, an extracting medium (preferably N-alkyl-substituted amide sich as N-methylformamide, etc.) is added to a reaction product consisting of dichlorotoluene and t-butyltoluene, distillation is carried out, t-butyltoluene is distilled away from the top of a column, then water is added to a solution at the bottom, consisting of a mixture of dichlorotoluene and the solvent, and dischlorotoluene is taken out from the organic layer.

USE: An intermediate for agricultural chemicals, drugs, dye, agents for photography, etc.
