Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing difluoromethane (HFC-32) on a commercial scale, which is completely harmless to the ozone layer.

CONSTITUTION: This method comprises reacting methylene chloride (CH2Cl2) with 2.0 to 2.3 mols of hydrogen fluoride(HF) per mold of methylene chloride by a continuous liquid-phase reaction process to produce difluoromethane (CH2F2) in the presence of 0.05 to 0.17 mols of antimony pentachloride (SbCl5) as the catalyst per mold of methylene chloride at 70 to 90°C and 11 to 12 kg/ cm2-G, while keeping pentavalent antimony (Sb+5) concentration at 85% or more.
