To produce the subject compound excellent in luminous sensitivity, durability and environmental characteristics as a photoelectric material with good productivity by heating a silicon halide phthalocyanine compound in the presence of water in a specific solvent.
(A) A halogen-based silicon phthalocyanine compound is heated in the substantial absence of an alkali in water and (B) a polar solvent having ≤10 permittivity or (C) a nitrogen-containing organic solvent. The component B is preferably polycarbonates or sulfoxides (e.g. ethylene carbonate) and the component C is preferably an amine-based, an amide-based or a lactam-based solvent (e.g. hexylamine). The boiling point of the component B or C is preferably ≥70°C and the amount of water required for hydrolysis is preferably ≤30wt.% based on the treating solvent. The amount of the treating solvent (water and the organic solvent) is preferably 1-800 pts.wt. based on 1 pt.wt. component A and the heating temperature at the time of hydrolysis is preferably 70-200°C.
