PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high purity and yield, by reducing 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone with a reducing agent and subjecting the resultant product without separation to condensation reaction using a phytol and a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 2,3,5-Trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone is reduced with a reducing agent in a solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate, etc., to give 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone. A phytol is added to the above-mentioned reaction solution without taking out the resultant product and metallic zinc and zinc chloride and further acetic anhydride as a catalyst are added to carry out condensation reaction and afford the aimed compound which is vitamin E. Metallic zinc powder and sulfuric acid, metallic zinc powder, hydrochloric acid and acetic acid, hydrosulfite, etc., may be preferably used as the reducing agent.
EFFECT: Since the metallic zinc, sulfuric acid, etc., are used, the industrialization is readily carried out and the raw material is inexpensive with great advantage to production.
USE: Medicines, foods, feeds, etc.
