PURPOSE: To produce a dull roll for rolling having high hardness and excellent wear resistance by subjecting the surface of a roll to dull finishing by laser beam projection and depositing a hard layer on the dull surface by an ion plating method, etc., at the time of manufacturing the dull roll.
CONSTITUTION: While the roll 1 for rolling is rotated at a prescribed speed by a rotary supporting device 2, a laser beam oscillated from a laser beam oscillator 3 is supplied by plural mirrors to a laser projecting head 4 and is focused to the roll 1 surface. The head is moved in the axial direction of the roll 1 by the rotation of a driving screw 5 synchronized with the rotation of the roll 1 by which the pulsed laser beams are projected to the roll surface to execute the dull finishing. The hard TiN film having about 2.0μm thickness is then formed by the ion plating method on the dulled surface. The surface hardness of the dulled roll is remarkably improved and the service life of the roll is extended.
