Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the resin used either alone or in combination with organic resins for formulating powder coatings by subjecting a mixture of specific silane compounds to hydrolysis and condensation in the presence of an organic titanate catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of an effective amount of an organic titanate catalyst, (A) 50 to 99 mole % of an organosilane selected out of organosilane of formula I, organosilane of formula II and a mixture of formulae I and II (R' and R" are each an organic group selected from 1-4C alkyl and phenyl; R is 1-3C alkyl), and (B) 1 to 50 mole % of epoxy-functional silane of formula III (R''' is 2-4C divalent hydrocarbon group; R is as described above) are incorporated to form the mixture wherein the amount of organosilane component represented by formula IV (Me is CH3; R is as described above) is less than 50 mole % and the mole content of organosilane of formula II is ≤70% of mole content of silane (B) when at least one of the organic groups R' or R" is alkyl. The mixture thus formed is hydrolyzed, condensed and volatile ingredient therein is removed, thereby obtaining the resin.
