To provide a method for stably producing high-purity ester compounds even in the presence of a quinone as an impurity by the esterification of a polyphenol compound in the presence of a specific compound.
This ester compound is obtained by the esterification of a polyphenol compound with a 3-25C carboxylic acid compound in the presence of a reducing agent. Zinc or magnesium is used as the reducing agent, the former being more preferable, at a dosage of 0.001 to 30 mols per 100 g of the polyphenol compound. A tertiary amine can be optionally used, in order to enhance the effects of the reducing agent. Particularly preferable carboxylic acids are acid halides. The ester compound can be used as a discotic, liquid crystal compound useful as a liquid crystal material.
