Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound selectively ethylated at its 2 and 3 positions in a high selectivity by ethylating a diphenylene oxide compound with a polyethylbenzene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst at a specific temperature under a specified condition.
CONSTITUTION: A diphenylene oxide compound having substitutable hydrogen atoms at its 2 and 3 positions is ethylated with a polyethylbenzene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (preferably silica alumina or zeolite) at a reaction temperature of 50-280°C under such a condition that the rate of the ethyl groups substituted at either of the 2 and 3 positions is ≥70%, thus producing the objective compound.
