PURPOSE: To produce an ethylated naphthalene in high yield while suppressing tar formation of raw material naphthalenes by ethylation of naphthalene with ethylene or ethanol as an ethylating agent in the presence of strongly acidic sulfonic acid as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In production of an ethylated naphthalene shown by the formula (Et)n-Naph-(R)m (in the formula, Naph shows naphthalene ring, R shows hydrogen, methyl group or isopropyl group, Et shows ethyl group, m shows 0-7 integer and n shows 1-8 integer with proviso that 1≤m+n≤8), a naphthalene shown by the formula Naph-(R)m(in the formula, Naph, R and m are as shown above) is reacted with ethylene or ethanol as an alkylating agent in the presence of a strongly acidic sulfonic acid.
