To produce a fluorinated aromatic compound in high yield and selectivity by directly fluorinating a specified aromatic compound with fluorine in a reaction medium containing a polyfluoroalkanesulfonic acid.
An aromatic compound of formula I (X is COOH, CONH2, CF3, CN, CHO, NO2, etc.; Y is F, Cl, OCH3, OCF3, OCCl3, p-NO2-C6H4, etc.; Z is H, F, Cl, CF3, CCl3, OCH3) is directly fluorinated with (B) fluorine in (C) a reaction medium containing a polyfluoroalkanesulfonic acid of formula II [(m) is 0 or a positive integer of 1-5; (n) is a positive integer of 1-3; Y is F, Cl, H, etc.] to produce (D) fluorinated aromatic compound of formula III. The component B is preferably introduced into the reaction medium together with an inert carrier gas (preferably nitrogen). For example, CF3SO3H, CF3-CFH-CF2- SO3H, etc., are used as the component C.
