Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject resin particles having excellent fusion bonding properties during molding, a low content of remaining monomers and slight blocking by subjecting a styrenic monomer or the monomer and a comonomer using a peroxy ketal as a polymerization initiator to suspension polymerization and then, adding a blowing agent.
CONSTITUTION: These formable styrenic resin particles having a low content of remaining monomers, slight blocking and excellent fusion bonding properties during molding are obtained by subjecting a styrenic monomer (e.g. styrene) or a mixture of the styrenic monomer and another copolymerizable vinyl monomer (e.g. methyl methacrylate) to suspension polymerization by using a peroxy ketal of the formula (R is a 1-5C alkyl)(e.g. 1,1-di-t-butylperoxy-2- methylcyclohexane) as a polymerization initiator in the presence of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate in an aqueous medium, cooling the reaction mixture, adding a blowing agent (e.g. n-pentane), further heating and expanding.
