To obtain a high-purity epoxy resin by reacting an epihalohydrin with a hydroxylated or aminated aromatic compound in the presence of an alkali (alkaline earth) metal hydroxide in a selected organic solvent.
An epihalohydrin is reacted with a hydroxylated or aminated aromatic compound in the presence of an alkali (alkaline earth) metal hydroxide in an organic solvent which comprises an aprotic solvent, has a boiling point lower than those of other reactants, is capable of forming an azeotropic mixture with water and yet immiscible with water, and has a solubility in water of at most 10%. Examples of the solvent used include esters of secondary or tertiary alcohols. To be concrete, e.g. isopropyl acetate is used. A mixture of isopropyl acetate, etc., with other solvents comprising, e.g. propylene glycol 1-5C alkyl ethers can also be used.
