PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound with high purity in high yield for a short reaction time, by reacting phthalic anhydride with a phenol derivative in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and an optional diluent in an automatic cleaning apparatus having a mixing effect.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R8-R11 are each H, halogen, alkyl, alkanoyl, alkoxy, alkanyloxy or sulfato) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R2 is OH, alkanoyloxy, sulfato, etc.; R13 and R14 are each H, OH, alkanoyloxy, sulfato, alkyl, halogen, etc., or R13 together with R14 form fused benzene ring or fused cycloalkyl ring; R15 is OH, alkanoyloxy, sulfato, halogen, alkanoylamino, etc.) in the presence of AlCl3 catalyst and an optional diluent (e.g. NaCl) in an automatic cleaning apparatus (especially screw type reactor) having a mixing effect at 220-240°C for 10-70 seconds, thereby to give a compound of formula III.
