Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject carboxylic acid useful as a raw material for electroluminescence elements, liquid crystalline compound mesogens and the like in a stable yield by reacting a specific compound with a specific phosphorus compound.
SOLUTION: (A) A phosphorus compound of the formula: R2OOC-Ar2-CH2PO (OR3)2 {R2 is H or the like; R3 is phenyl or the like; Ar2 is a group of formula I [R4 is a 1-20C alkyl or the like; (m1) is an integer of 0-4] or the like} is activated with (B) a basic catalyst in an amount of 0.1-10 moles per mole of the component A, and subsequently reacting the activated compound with (C) a compound of the formula: R3-O-Ar1-CHO {R5 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group or the like; Ar1 is a group of formula II [R1 is a 1-20C alkyl or the like; (n1) is an integer of 0-4] or the like} in an A:C molar ratio of 1:5 usually at the atmospheric pressure at -70 to 200°C for 0.1-100 hr to obtain the objective carboxylic acid of the formula : HO-Ar1-CH2=CH2-Ar2-COOR2.
