PURPOSE: To produce isophoronediamine useful as a raw material for alicyclic polyamides and coatings in high yield and purity.
CONSTITUTION: This process for the production of isophoronediamine comprises the 1st step to react isophoronpnitrile with ammonia in the presence of methanol solvent to obtain a mixture of isophoroneiminonitrile and isophoronenitrile and the 2nd step to convert the mixture into the isophoronediamine by the reducing amination with a fixed bed reactor containing a packed granular Raney cobalt maintained at 40-150°C. This process is effective for suppressing the by-production of intramolecular cyclization reaction product, completely converting an intermediate unable to be separated by distillation and getting the objective isophoronediamine in high productivity, selectivity and purity.
