PURPOSE: To produce the subject substance composed mainly of 3-4C paraffins by the catalytic cracking of 5-10C paraffins or hydrocarbons composed mainly of the paraffins in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a mordenite-type zeolite dealuminized by acid treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The subject substance composed mainly of 3-4C paraffins is produced by the catalytic cracking of 5-10C paraffins or hydrocarbons composed mainly of the paraffins (e.g. light naphtha having a boiling point of 30-130°C). The objective substance can be produced in high selectivity and yield by using an acid-dealuminized mordenite type zeolite as a catalyst and carrying out the reaction at 300-500°C. The dealuminized mordenite-type zeolite can be prepared by treating a zeolite with a 0.1-10N aqueous solution of a mineral acid at room temperature-90°C for 0.1-30hr until the molar ratio of silica/alumina reaches 15-60. The zeolite to be used as a raw material for the above treatment may be synthetic or natural zeolite.
