Title:
PRODUCTION OF M-PHENOXYBENZYL ALCOHOL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS6341435
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound useful as a raw material for insecticide in high yield without producing by-product, by using chlorobenzene and m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol as raw materials and reacting the raw materials with each other in a polar solvent in the presence of a base under a specific condition while removing the produced water by azeotropic distillation with chlorobenzene.

CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is produced by reacting chlorobenzene with m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol in the presence of a copper compound catalyst in a polar solvent (e.g. N,N'-dimethylimidazolidinone, N,N'-dimethylformamide, etc.) using ≥1.0g-equivalent, preferably 1.0W2.0g-equivalent of a base per 1mol of m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol under inert gas pressure at 150W250°C, preferably 170W220°C while removing produced water from the reaction system by the azeotropic distillation with chlorobenzene. The amount of chlorobenzene is preferably ≥1.0mol per 1mol of m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol.
