PURPOSE: To readily separate and increase yield in obtaining the subject compound useful as intermediate of medical and agricultural chemicals by using dibromomethane, alcohol and carbon monoxide as raw materials, using a catalyst comprising a specific compound carrying on a carbonaceous carrier and reacting in liquid phase.

CONSTITUTION: Dibromomethane, alcohol and carbon monoxide are used as raw materials and reacted at from ordinary temperature to 200°C, preferably at 40-180°C in the presence of a solid catalyst carrying metal or a compound of at least one element selected from cobalt, palladium and rhodium on a carbonaceous carrier and preferably in the co-presence of a basic compound to afford the objective compound. Besides, 1-100g, preferably 5-50g the above-mentioned catalyst is used to 1mol dibromomethane. Furthermore, carrying amount of active component carried on the carbonaceous carrier is 0.01-50wt.%, preferably 0.1-20wt.% calculated as metal.
