PURPOSE: To obtain the title mesophase pitch suitable as a raw material for carbon fiber with high tenacity and high elastic modulus, by putting a tarry material to solvent extraction treatment followed by subjecting the resulting extract to heat treatment process.
CONSTITUTION: Firstly, a carbonaceous material produced from petroleum or coal is put to vacuum distillation to remove a low-boiling fraction to obtain a tarry material containing component(s) ≥400°C in boiling point. Thence, said tarry material is put to extraction treatment using an organic solvent for aromatic fraction extraction, and the resulting extract is heat-treated to produce a pitch ca 20-80wt.% in mesophase content. This pitch is then subjected to, in a molten state, a separating operation based on specific gravity difference to separate into mesophase pitch component and nonmesophase pitch component, thus obtaining the objective mesophase pitch.
