PURPOSE: To easily obtain the subject compd. without the need for purification of an intermediate product by bringing resorcin and an amine into reaction, then treating the reaction product with an alkylating agent.

CONSTITUTION: The resorcin and the amine of the formula R1-NH2 (R1 is a 2 to 8C alkyl, a 5 to 7C cycloalkyl) are brought into reaction under a pressure of 3 to 40 bar at 180 to 250°C in the presence of sulfurous acid, an ester of the sulfurous acid or the mixture composed thereof to obtain an aminophenol of formula I. The aminophenol of formula I is then treated at pH 3 to 7 in an aq. medium under a pressure of 1 to 50 at 60 to 180°C with the alkylating agent of the formula R3-X (X is an elminable group) without isolating the aminophenol, by which the objective compd. of formula II is obtd. The amine and the resorcin are used at a molar ratio of 1:2 to 2:1 and the sulfurous acid, the ester of the sulfurous acid or the mixture composed thereof is used at 1 to 20 wt.% of the resorcin.
