Abstract:
To provide a production method for α- and β-methyl-γ-butyrolactone(MeGBL) as well as 3-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF).
This invention is a production method for MeGBL and/or MeTHF from 3-(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydrofuran (HOMeTHF), 3-formyltetrahydrofuran (FTHF) or their mixture wherein HOMeTHF, FTHF or their mixture are brought into contact with a copper on zirconia hydrate catalyst under the temperature and pressure conditions at which the formation of MeGBL and/or MeTHF are derived. This process can be carried out in an inactive atmosphere and/or a hydrogen gas. In addition, this process can be carried out in the presence of a secondary alcohol.
