Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method capable of producing various carbon allotropes at high purity with a salt-like carbide as a raw material.SOLUTION: A method of producing a carbon allotrope by controlling a reduction capacity of a low melting point halide salt reactant by changing a reduction capacity of cations, and/or by changing a temperature of a melt when producing carbon allotropes of sp1, sp2 and/or sp3 hybrid by oxidizing carbide anions or negative ions from salt-like carbide at a reaction temperature of from about 150 to about 750°C, preferably from about 250 to 400°C. The reduction capacity of the low melting point halide salt reactant is controlled in an atmosphere of and in the amount of a heating temperature, oxygen and/or moisture being deficient or substantially deficient in a reactor, wherein the low melting point halide salt reactant is a salt of tin, lead, mercury or zinc, the salt-like carbide is calcium carbide, magnesium carbide or aluminum carbide. Carbon allotropes that can be produced include diamond.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
