To obtain a methyl or ethyl ester of trifluoroacetic acid an chlorodifluoroacetic acid using an energy-saving method in a technically simple manner without after-treatment by hydrolysis, by reacting a corresponding acid chloride with a corresponding alcohol at a specific ratio in the presence of a specific catalyst.
The ester is obtained by reacting (A) a corresponding acid chloride with (B) an excess amount of a corresponding alcohol in the presence of (C) a catalyst composed of an onium salt of an acid at such a B/A molar ratio that two phases are formed and one of the phases contains the ester having purity of 95 wt.% or higher without distillation. The ester can be isolated by separating the ester phase from the other phase by the phase separation. It is preferable that a B/A molar ratio is 1.01-5. When methyl trifluoroacetate is produced, the ratio is preferably 1.03-4.
