PURPOSE: To obtain the subject substance in a high recovery rate by reacting methanol and t-butyl alcohol under a specific condition and distilling and reacting a reaction product mixture in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material mixture containing t-butyl alcohol and methanol in a molar ratio of 1:2-3 is passed through a first etherifying reaction zone containing an etherifying catalyst under an etherifying condition at a liquid hourly space velocity wherein the raw material mixture is 1-10 vol. per 1 vol. of a catalyst to form a first reaction product mixture. This reaction product mixture is passed through a distillation zone to be fractionated into a first light fraction containing isobutylene, methanol and methyl t-butyl ether and a second heavy fraction containing methanol, t-butyl alcohol and water. This second heavy fraction is passed through a second etherifying reaction zone containing an etherifying catalyst under an etherifying condition at a liquid hourly space velocity of catalyst : raw material = 1:1-10 vol. to form a second reaction product mixture.
