PURPOSE: A mixture of coal particles and a solvent is preheated up to a certain temperature and heated to effect its liquefaction, then a part of the solvent and the liquefied coal is separated as an oil fraction, and the liquefied product is heat treated to produce a solid fuel of high calorie from low-grade coal such as lignite.
CONSTITUTION: Coal particles such as lignite are mixed with a hydrocarbon solvent containing a hydrogen-transferring or hydrogen-donating agent to form a slurry and the slurry is heated in the preheating zone 20 at a temperature lower than 420°C. Then, the slurry is fed to the liquefaction zone 30 where the slurry is heated up to 440W520°C, preferably 460W500°C at a temperature rise rate of higher than 150°C/10min, preferably within 1min, to solubilize the coal particles. The product is sent to the gas-liquid separation zone 40 where it is separated into the hot gas stream and the liquid stream and the liquid stream is introduced into the heat treating zone 50 where a part of the solvent and the liquefied coal is recovered as an oil fraction, further, the resultant solid is obtained as a solid fuel. The gas and liquid formed at this stage are separated in the gas- liquid separation zone 60 and the recovered oil fraction is prepared into a solvent for coal in the hydrogenation zone 70.
