Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically obtain a mono and dicarboxylic acid in good yield by two stage method subjecting an unsaturated fatty acid of rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, etc., or its derivative to oxidation controlled with H2O2 in the presence of a metal oxide, etc., and carrying out cleavage and oxidative hydrolysis of the oxidized material by using nitric acid.
SOLUTION: An unsaturated fatty acid {especially preferably a compound of the formula [(n) is 1-3; R1 is alkenyl or alkadienyl; R2 is H or an alkyl when (n) is 1 and R2 is an alkylene or an alkenylene when (n) is 2 and R2 is an alkyl when (n) is 3]} and/or its ester is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a metal oxide or a carboxylic acid and as necessary in combination with ruthenium catalyst. Then, successively, the reaction mixture is reacted with nitric acid in the presence of a vanadium catalyst and as necessary, in combination with a cocatalyst and the resultant mono and dicarboxylic acid is recovered. An oleic acid, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil or soybean oil is preferable as the compound of the formula. The objective acid can be obtained in good reaction selectivity and is industrially advantageous, according to the method.
