PURPOSE: To improve the production yield of monochloro-3-cyanopyridine compound by using a specific chlorinating agent, wherein the monochloro-3- cyanopyridine compound is useful as a raw material for medicines and agrichemicals and has been produced in low yields by conventional methods.
CONSTITUTION: Monochloro-3-cyanopyridine of the formula (e.g. 2-chloro-3- cyanopyridine) is obtained by subjecting 3-cyanopyridine to a gaseous phase contact reaction with a chlorinating agent in the presence of a chlorination catalyst containing a copper oxide and/or chloride. At least a chlorinating agent selected from a chlorinated hydrocarbon (CCl4), a chlorinated sulfur compound (thionyl chloride) and a chlorinated phosphorus compound (oxyphosphorus chloride) is used for the reaction.
