PURPOSE: To obtain the subject support having a coated, gas-permeable shaped body to high strength by welding or brazing metal foil strips to at least one of the adjacent metal foil strips or at least one of the mutually adjacent layers of the same metal foil strips during or after formation of the shaped body.
CONSTITUTION: In the coated monolithic metal support composed of the cylindrical shaped body 6 in which the spreads in the longitudinal direction of the smooth or corrugated metal foil strips 1 and 4 exist in a direction transverse to the axis of a cylindrical body, these strips have, in some cases, slots, perforations and/or recesses and which are laminated or folded or are, in some cases, cabled or helically taken up in order to form the shaped body 6. At this time, the strips are welded or brazed to both adjacent strips or to both adjacent layers of the same strips during or after the formation of the shaped body 6.
