To smoothly conduct a reaction even when the amount of an solvent used is small in producing an N-alkoxycarbonyl compound at a low cost.
This N-alkoxycarbonyl compound is produced by reacting an amino compound or an imino compound with a bicarbonate of the formula (R is a saturated or unsaturated akyl or aralkyl). The reaction is carried out while stirring the reaction mixture with a necessary stirring power of 60w/m3 to 20km/m3 in an aqueous solvent in the presence of an inorganic salt at -30°C top 100°C and pH1-8. An amino compound or an imino compound, and a bicarbonate are used at an equivalent ratio 1:1 to 1:5. When the reaction mixture is stirred with the necessary stirring power, the reaction proceeds at an astonishing high speed and thus, the amount of the use of an organic solvent conventionally required is widely reduced, or the reaction proceeds even in the absence of a solvent. Further, the COD(chemical oxygen demand) and the BOD(biological oxygen demand) discharged from the reaction process can be extremely reduced.
