Abstract:

PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as a drug and an amino acid precursor in high purity, industrially and advantageously, by hydrolyzing a hydantoin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide at a specific temperature, specifying pH, crystallizing and acidifying. CONSTITUTION:A hydantoin shown by formula I [R1 is H, OH or OR3 (R3 is 1-3C alkyl); R21 is B or OR4 (R4 is 1-3C alkyl)] is hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. NaOH) at 40-70 deg.C to give a mixture of the hydantoin and an N-carbamoyl-phenylalanine shown by formula II, the mixture is adjusted to pH6.5-7.5, the compound shown by formula I is crystallized, the mixture solution is filtered, the filtrate is further acidified, adjusted to pH3.0-5.0, the compound shown by formula II is crystallized and obtained.
