PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound with small amounts of used formic acid and acetic anhydride in a short time and in high yield by reacting aspartic acid having a content of specific particle size in a specific range with formic acid and acetic anhydride.
CONSTITUTION: In obtaining N-formylaspartic acid anhydride from aspartic acid, formic acid and acetic anhydride, the total amount of aspartic acid having 60 mesh particle diameter (one having ≥250μm particle diameter) is made ≥15wt.% by sieving, an industrially simple and easy method, N-formylaspartic acid anhydride is produced in a short time and in high yield with small amounts of formic acid and acetic anhydride used without requiring an aromatic hydrocarbon and a halogenated hydrocarbon. In this method, any metal oxide or hydroxide or salt (e.g. magnesium acetate) is preferably present as a catalyst.
