To obtain a new algicide usable as an algicide or useful in the extermination of red water mainly containing Prorocentrum micans NIES-12 because of the selective alglicidal activity against Prorocentrum micans NIES-12 produced by microorganisms.
This new algicide is a compound represented by the formula. The compound of the formula is obtained by incubating a microorganism which belongs to the genus Vibrio and is able to produce the compound of the formula in a culture medium, forming and accumulating te compound of the formula in the cultured product and then extracting the compound of the formula from this cultured product. As the strain used, Vibrio sp. G-744 strain can be illustrated. The culture medium moderately containing carbon sources (e.g. glucose, starch and the like), nitrogen sources (e.g. ammonium chloride, ammonium sulfate and the like), inorganic substances (e.g. common salt, potassium chloride and the like) and required growth and production promoters capable of supplying as resources is usable as the culture medium. It is preferable to maintain the incubation temperature at 30-35°C and the culture medium at pH 7-8. By incubating by means of liquid culture for 2-5 days, the objective substance is formed and accumulated in the bacterial body in the culture solution.
