PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines, agricultural chemicals, additives, etc., for polymeric materials in high yield by reacting a 2,6-dialkylaniline with carbon disulfide in the presence of a tertiary amine.
CONSTITUTION: A 2,6-dialkylaniline is reacted with carbon disulfide in the presence of a tertiary amine such as triethylamine or triethanolamine in or without a polar solvent (e.g. water or ethanol) at 50-200°C to afford the subject compound. The molar ratios of the carbon disulfide and the tertiary amine to the 2,6-dialkylaniline are respectively 0.5-1.0. The resultant compound is useful as a raw material for 2,6-dialkylphenylcarbodiimide useful as a hydrolytic preventive agent for polyurethanes, etc., or an antioxidant for polyesters.
