PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound from an alkali metal salt of a phenolic compound and hydroxylamine-o-sulfonic acid, in the presence of a catalyst selected from an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulfate, a metal chelating agent, a specific olein and nitrophenol.
CONSTITUTION: The O-arylhydroxylamine of formula IV can be produced by reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenolic compound of formula III (Ar is aryl; M is alkali metal) with hydroxylamine-o-sulfonic acid in the presence of a novel catalyst selected from (A) 0.1W1pt.wt. of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulfate, (B) 0.01W0.05mol of a metal chelating agent (e.g. ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid salt), (C) 0.2W0.7mol of an olefin of forlmula I (R1 and R2 are carnoxyl, alkoxy, etc.; R3 and R4 are H or alkyl) (e.g. formaric acic) and (D) 0.05W0.5mol of a nitrophenol compound of formula II (X is halogen, alkyl, etc.; m is 0W2; n is 1W3).
