Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for various medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., by reacting a specific microorganism (treated substance) of the genus Candida with an enantiomeric mixture of butanediol.

CONSTITUTION: A microorganism (e.g. Candida utilis IFO 1086 or 0639), belonging to the genus Candida, Pichia, Schizoblastosporium or Bacillus and having the ability to convert 1,3-butanediol into optically active (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid or a treated substance of the aforementioned microorganism is reacted with an enantiomeric mixture of the 1,3-butanediol to afford the objective compound.
