To obtain an optically active 3-substituted indole having high optical purity for medicine raw materials, etc., by bringing a specific substrate having double bond at side chain into contact with a cultured product of a specific microorganism for bio-reductively converging the substrate to a 3-substituted indole under bio-reductive conversion condition.
A substrate represented by formula I [R1 is a lower alkyl; R2 is H or a lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are each H or a substituent group which has not bad influence upon bio-reductive conversion] is brought into contact with a cultured product of at least one kind of microorganism selected from a group comprising microorganisms belonging to the genera Saccharomyces, Schizosaccharomyces, Corynebacterium, Bacillus, Streptomyces and Gloeosprium under bio-reductive conversion condition to provide the objective optically active 3-substituted indole having high optical activity, represented by formula II and useful as a raw material, etc., of precursor of 1-(substituted indol-3-yl)-2- aminoalkane which is a synthetic intermediate for various medicines through a reduction reaction.
